The Summer Express… was a dynamic experience! In our first year of operation, we learned a great deal under the skilled supervision of Dr. Pelham’s team. The STP Model proved highly effective in providing a comprehensive resource to families with children impacted by ADHD. Many parents reported to our staff that this was the first time their children had an opportunity to experience success on a global level! We are so pleased we had an opportunity to participate.

The Summer Treatment Program is part of our multicomponent prevention initiative for children at risk for drug abuse, antisocial behavior, and academic dropout. The STP is conceptualized to have a “catalytic” effect on the other intervention components [school consultation, parent training]… [through which] positive gains accrued during the summer increase… successful maintenance and generalization… to the forthcoming academic year. In a recent evaluation we found overwhelming support for efficacy… . Positive gains were made by experimental children in behavioral self-regulation… aggression, social adjustment, academic behaviors, and… parent satisfaction. We strongly support the use of the STP as a comprehensive intervention for both short-and long-term efforts.

The Summer Treatment Program’s elegant and sophisticated application of social learning principles to academic development, athletic skills, recreational activities, and social relationships reflects many years of careful program development, evaluation, and research. The program thoughtfully addresses the developmental needs of children… and systematically links programs for children to a parenting skill building group. An exceptionally detailed manual, comprehensive staff training programs, and materials to monitor implementation have ensured the successful dissemination of this program… This is the state-of-the-art in comprehensive, evidence-based, summer treatment services for children with ADHD.

I felt that the STP was as much for the parents as it was for the children. Parents were given the support and tools to extend the program into the home, and those that chose to do this found that their entire family benefited from the structure and predictability. The classroom component was very powerful; children that were traditionally the “losers” in their regular school classrooms were achieving a level of competency and status that instilled a sense of self-worth and optimism extending beyond the classroom.

I was so impressed with the clinical utility of the STP that I incorporated the program into our ADHD Service at the NYU Child Study Center. The STP is fully manualized so that others can benefit from Dr. Pelham’s years of experience with this program. Moreover, the STP is clinically flexible so that individualized treatment plans can be implemented as well. This intensive, 8-week summer program offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art behavioral interventions for children with ADHD.

We have used Dr. Pelham’s summer treatment model at Emory for several years. The program is a joy to conduct, and the families we have served have consistently given it their highest evaluations. For children who have experienced repeated failures in the social and academic realms, this program can be a remarkable turnaround. It provides a solid base on which the child, the family, and the school can continue to build.

Having been involved and observed the Summer Treatment Program (STP) for several years, I can point to any one of a number of positive attributes of the STP. The STP allows children with ADHD to have a positive summer experience. Many parents have identified this as perhaps the most valuable aspect of the camp… Children develop more self-confidence and a better self-image to take home and back to their regular school and neighborhood… The behavioral management is unparalleled. With an emphasis on positive reinforcement, the STP provides an outstanding milieu in which to implement special behavioral programs or test the true effects of medication on a child’s behavior.

The STP is the best treatment program in the world. You know that old saying, ‘imitation is the highest form of flattery.’ I modeled my own program on the STP.
